Thanks

Thanks for the congratulations. We had spent some nice days in the middle of the black forest.
The nature was really impressive. We had slept in a little apartment (3 times our home) in a house of farmers.

Yesterday on the way back, we made a break in Strasbourg in France, which seemed to be really nice city. But actually after you are over-whelmed by the nature, you would be resistant to the cathedral, the shopping street, the bridges, and all what a middle European city includes.

One thing we were certain about. It is really a place to relax, we will be back.

kisses,
Debora & Nael

Lebanese Hommos and Turkish Coffee

It's very interesting to observe how Lebanese (at least those I meat in Europe) are convinced that Hommos, Sfyha, Falafel, Coffee etc. is Lebanese food. I remember a whole-day discussion with a Lebanese friend as Dafer was here about this issue.
Today in al-Quds el-Araby I read an article about Lebanese claiming that Israel stole "their" national food "Hommos"..
I mean, mashy, Israel stole the dish and registered a Gueniss-book record with the biggest Hommos plate and "we" have to resist that. But how comes that Israel stole the hommos from the Lebanese? Israelis are not aloud to enter Lebanon neither the opposite. How comes Israelis would even taste what the lucky Lebanese eat??!
Ok, I can't prove that Hommos, Falafel, etc are Palestinians, but it is obvious that Israel stole them from the Palestinians as part of the Palestinian culture they stole together with the land.

I have no idea, why even an Iraqi Falafel restaurant in cologne calls his restaurant "Lebanon Vitamin". As I asked why the name, he said "because I sell Lebanese food". Is there no Falafel in Iraq? he said "yes, but it is different". On my question trying to understand the "difference", he couldn't explain.

This disability of explaining the claimed "difference" reminds me the embarrassment of a Jordanian waitress in a fancy café as she served us "Turkish coffee", as I asked her "why do you call it Turkish, what is the difference to the "Arabic" version", she also couldn't answer.

I tend to believe that both situations have much in common; as Turkish soldiers surrendered from Austria, they left coffee "their drink" behind them. Europeans started cooking coffee as Turkish did. After some years, when Europeans filtered the coffee and invented the "press-machine-coffee" (espresso) they called the old simple way "Turkish".

The oldest documentation about coffee from the year 1454 belongs to a the sheich Gamal el-Deen from Yemen, who planted the seeds he brought from the region Kafa (Kahwa) in Ethiopia and started cooking the roasted and blended beans in water, as we still do today.

Although Turkish (ottomans) occupied the region only in the 16th century and took the coffee to Europe first in the 17th, the way we cook coffee is known in Europe as "Turkish Coffee". This is understandable, it is simply the way Europeans know it.

Back to Hommos. Lebanese are the first immigrating from the middle east to Europe, North and Latin America and to Africa. And like all immigrants they kept cooking what they know at home, they also opened restaurants serving these dishes.
Now, again as westerners ate these plates for the first time from a Lebanese, they called it "Lebanese food", which is again their point of view.

But why the hell this Jordanian waitress and the Iraqi restaurant owner call their coffee as Turkish and their Hommos as Lebanese?

I find only one explanation: These two people, representing thousands of Arabs including the journalist of Al-Quds el-Araby are totally convinced of the slogan "What a European says must be correct".

Here, I would like to quote Amjad who wrote me an email today (about another topic) out of three words "Sad, sad world".

Sahteen with your next Hommos,
Nael

an article about bike riding in Gaza

he has a clue

A simply interesting article:

On your TV screen you will see, repeatedly ,
Arabs calling the Israelis : the Jews

I am certain that most of the Arabs , of all generations,
do know the difference between Jews and Israelis , by now,
but nevertheless they still use the term "Jews"
as a matter of habit , especially by the elder Palestinians.

What has happened ??

At the beginning of the 20Th Century , Arabs in general
and the Palestinians peculiarly , have seen the influx
of European-Jews into their Palestine.............

Until May 1948 the term Israel and or Israelis
what not yet used ..............and those immigrants
whether legal or illegal were Jews
and thus they were logically called : " the Jews"
instead of the Polish,Ukrainian,Hungarian or the French.

Practically and until 1948 there was no reason to call them
Israelis or Israeli-citizens simply because there was no
State of Israel , as we later have noticed it quite well
and quite remorsefully, too.

Therefore ,
many Arabs still use the old term of the Jews
like most of the older Westerners still use the word "Icebox"
to say Refrigerator.

Incidentaly , I grew up in Beirut ,
where "Refugee" means Palestinian......

Have no fear !!
Arabs are rarely racists ,
and Arabs historically never ever harmed the Jews
until , our self defence struggles, which started in 1948.

So next time when you hear an Arab on TV ,cursing the Jews ,
you will trust me and understand that he simply means "Israelis".

Now , why do Arabs hate the Israelis ??
is another story
which is not at all difficult to explain !!!

German elections

For those who are interested in German politics, or just curious how a program can show you which political party has more similarity to your opinion, try this out.

You'll be asked about different thesis, which you can agree, disagree or be neutral about, then your answers will be compared with those of the German parties.

It is a nice way promoting democracy and dealing with parties as political groups with shared interest and not as a marketing brand or personalities.

Story of this Picture

My friend Simone had asked me several times to cut his hair. But because we were visiting people I was always postponing not to make the house of the people dirty.

In Gijon we slept in a camping place directly over the sea. Early morning we decided to go over the rocks on a monument called "Cemetery" (see the white stones), so that I would cut simone´s hair there.

As you can imagine, soon we had public observing our surrealist act. Two old men sat on a stone in front of us watching.
As I finished Simone made as if he gave money and gave him the rest back. Then I turned my face to one of the old men and made a sign on the hair cut machine. He reacted directly asking how much money I would charge him. I said "for you, for free", the man came running down the stones, before I would change my mind and ask him for money, and asked me to cut hiar on Zero.

While I was cutting his hair, Simone told him that I am a very famous hair cut-artist, who only cuts hair in wonderful natural sites. He told that I am from the Fashion Institute of Bethlehem, the most famous in the Arab world, and that now I am making a tour around Europe. He also told him that he should feel very lucky that I am not charging him, because Simone had to pay me 30 euro.
The old man asked me till when I am staying in Gijon, but I told him that the day after I will go to Galicia (which was true), he was wishing successful journey and felt him self very special to be the "chosen" customer on the tour of the Bethlehemite artist. He was so excited and astonished, that he told that nobody ever cut his hair like that !
(of course, he usually goes to professionals :-) )

This was definitely one of the highlights in our trip.

My next tour in the mount of Mar Saba, if you want a hair cut, meet me there !

kisses,
nael

from Portugal

First of all, happy Birthday uncle Jamal. We wish you good health together with our beloved kawkab. You might go older, but your spirit seems to keep as young as it was once, it only gets wiser. We love you, Nael and Debora.

On the 5th early morning we left Spain with the the joke to arrive at 6 p.m in Setubal. We took 2 lifts in spain till a village in the north of portugal and changed fours cars in Portugal, the last of them was Debora, who picked us up in Aguas de Mora (15 km to the east of Setubal). Believe it or not, we were at 6:05p.m drinking our first (until now the last) beer at the bank of the river Sado in the center of Setubal.

I am sorry for writting you late, but there is a problem with the internet. And as palestinians and portuguese have similar quality services, we were promised to have the internet fixed yesterday, but now I had to search for an internet cafe, because it is still not working.

Simone took some nice pictures from the trip, which you can see here.

From Galicia Country

Dear family,
soon we would finish our "long" hitchhicking trip. We reached yesterday Galcia from Gijon (see map).
We are staying at the home of a friend of us (Gabriel), who used to be our neighbour in Cologne.
A Coruna is really a nice city built on a half island, I will write you more into details.
Today we will spend the day here and tomorrow early morning we will start the trip to our final destination - Setubal. Hopefully we will reach tomorrow and not too late.

kisses for now, and I will update you from Portugal again.

Fourth day hitchhiking

Yesterday Nael and Simone spent the day in Bilbao and slept over there to make a break. They have broken the tent and luckily found a couchsurfing (it is also a kind of hitchhiking but to sleep :-)))

They are having quite a lot of difficulties in Spain to get a ride and were stuck today before Santander. They could reach then later Santander and from there went to Gijón where they are now visiting a friend of ours (I know you should be wondering that we have spanish friends but please don't tell anybody). They are sleeping there tonight and probably tomorrow will leave to continue their adventure.

I am leaving on Friday to Portugal and am quite curious to know who will reach first.

Kisses,

Debora

Sunday, 9 August 2009

Second day hitchhiking

After a rainy night in Léon, Nael and Simone started heading to Spain to discover that Spain is not the friendliest country for hitchhiking. They could reach S.Sebastian and had to take a train to Bilbao. They will stay one day in Bilbao to rest and to visit the city. I believe they will then try to find a way to reach Portugal.
I will be keeping you up to date.

Cheers,

Debora
