Internet Tip - from Nael
those of you how know this, don't read..
1. the OR-Search: you type different words in google separated with spaces.
result: Google searches for websites including any of the different words or all of them.
example: "dar qassis", google gives 1020 results for dar and qassis, dar or qassis.
2. the AND-Search: you type different words in google separated with spaces and plus "+".
result: Google searches for websites, that include all different words.
example: "palestine +israel", google gives about 13 milion results for websites including both words, while for "palestine israel" about 16 million.
3. the NO-Search: you type different words in google separated with spaces and minus "-".
result: Google searches for websites, that don't include the word with the minus.
example: "dar -qassis", google gives websites with "dar" but never our website, because it includes "qassis".
4. the FILETYPE-Search: you type your search then you write "filetype: (the type you need, e.g. doc, xls, pdf, jpg, etc.)"
result: Google searches only for the excel, acrobat or photos files that you are searching.
example: "paleastinian authority filetype:xls", google gives only Excel files including the words palestinian authority.
5. you type a dot "." between two words.
result: Google searches only for websites, including both words directly after each other.
example: "rifat.kassis", google will not give any website that includes "rifat odeh kassis", only those with the word kassis directly after the word rifat.
6. you type a star "*" between two words.
result: Google searches for websites, including both words separately.
example: "george*bush", google give websites with george w. bush.
7. you can mix the search options.
8. capital and small letters are ignored from google.
9. these rules are not strict, google tries, to give as much results as it can, even if it has sometimes to ignore your search method.
for example: "Beit*Sahour", google will not find websites with both words beit and sahour separated, so it ignores your star, and continues the search !
10. these search methods are the same for all others like yahoo, msn, altavista, etc.
I hope some of you would be faster searching for what they need from the internet.
kisses,
Nael

Welcome to the family, Dalia and Malek
We, who call our selves "the cousins", are all from last century. Although I was born, only 18 years before the 3ed millennium, I heard many stories from my grandmother Mary, whom you unfortunately didn't meet, about the unimaginable stretch after the year 2000 "الفين ولا تؤلّف" .
I won't tell, that you were born in hard times, because Mary '10 was born during the 1st world war, Hani '42 poverty time during the second world war, Norma '48 the Nakbah, all the rest of the family in the times of the occupation of the West Bank, the Lebanon War, the first and second intifada, your sister and brother in the Anti-Terror and you in the era of the Hamas-Fateh Conflict.
We've always heard "but, at that time it was better", it seems dear Malek, dear Dalia, it had never been better, but we only remember the nice of it, the reason that made us continue.
But, there's one difference between your time and ours; modern technology, specially the internet.
Although we live in different geographical spaces, we awaited to see you at the PC Monitor. The news of your birth were after some minutes on the net, and your photos at the same night.
Don't laugh! do not laugh when you read this, thinking that we are very old style, still talking about photos at the same night, while it's normal at your time to have a live web cam at the hospital ! which is also possible at our time (ok, you would need a video camera, a laptop, W-Lan, etc) but no one, was really willing to watch your mom suffering, and you, 2 little monkeys, trying very hard to make your first cry ;-)
I write you, wishing that someday you can read it, but maybe there would be no PC in the future, everyone would have a simplified cheap laptop that uses different technology. I just hope that this text-format would continue and all these low-class websites would still be accessible. Otherwise Rami has to save this on a CD, pardon a flash memory, or even on his mobile (we already have this), so that you can read it when you start understanding what you read.
Another populist theme of the year 2007 is the "climate catastrophe"; the global warming, which refers to the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans in recent decades and its projected continuation (wikipedia, haha). This subject had been in discussion at least since the "first Iraq war", but only now, after the "war against Iraq", it has been a hot topic. Why now?! we still don't know exactly, may be to your time, you'll learn it in history.
Where are we? now I live in Bonn/Germany with my girlfriend Debora from Setubal/Portugal, you live in شارع الخضرية, Beit Sahour/Palestine, your Mom's family in the USA, but your grandmother Ma'zuza came to help your parents, looking after you. Your grandfather Hani, who lives in the Iskan, and your parents are building a new house beside the Iskan, to where you probably would soon move. Your aunt Rula, had just came back from the USA with Issa, Hazar and Ramiz some years ago and your friend Yazan, with whom you quarrel much was born in Beit Sahour.
You use Shekel (NIS) in Beit Sahour which you need 5.85 to get one Euro, which we use in Germany, from which we need 74 cents to buy one U.S dollar. You would need (as i know) 3 NIS to buy a falafel sandwich, about 4 NIS for a liter of Benzin, Cola, i hope you'll never buy. 45 NIS for a Kg of meat, and 65 NIS for a Camel-fillet from Hebron. I remember 1 Kg of Tomato for 1 NIS, and 3 Kg of Banana for 10 NIS, which might be also not actualized now..
Please, readers, add under comments, some other funny prices.
Your father works at the ATG (Alternative Tourism Group in Beit Sahour) and deals with cars and others, which he gets from Germany. On the day you were born, we bought 2 Opel Astra 2005 (new model). Your Grandfather Hani is making his last year as an evangelist of the Lutheran Church/Beit Sahour, where he had been for about 40 years a teacher and then headmaster. He is now full of energy and new ideas for future business plans. Your mom is studying at the open university, Hind at the american school, and Bashar believes he owns a horse.
You are some days old, half bold, anonymous and ugly, like every other new born babies. And we are still getting familiar with your names, convincing our selves that they are nice; Dalia and Malek. Don't take it personal kids, what we still know from you is your crying face and the exhausted face of your mom after the birth.
Be sure, I already love you, I wish to see you together with Yazan to start enjoying the time with you like with Barhoum, Yasmin, Hazar, Amir, Hind, Ramiz and Bashar.
Your uncle,
Nael

Poetry on Sunday - from Duna

in deinem Bann gezogen,
mit all meinen Sinnen,
Menschen bewundern deine Anwesenheit,
denn du allein lässt ihre Einsamkeit vergehen.sorry, this time I was late publishing, but i hope you enjoy it.
Bethlehem

my father on his way home
First of all, Happy Wedding Anniversary to Hunaida and Simon (14th of July)
Yesterday evening we came back from Paris after 2 hot, hard and joyful days. 2 days of nice food and lots lots of photos - my father has for sure some Japanese blood, he's a world champion of 1 photo every third minute! Nevertheless some photos can be sold for real money. I'll send a bunch of them for Bisan to publish.
We slept in a hotel in the northern part of Paris, in an Islamic-Jewish neighborhood. We walked much through the classical huge city of great architecture. We didn't visit any museum, but a very old book store. Talking about books, this was the most that impressed my father; sooo many books are being sold on the streets of the city.
Saturday was the Bastille-day, so we went at the evening to see the fire work around the Eiffel Tower. The tower is called Eiffel (أيفـل) which can be miss pronounced in Arabic to sound like"Evil". Gustav Eiffel is the name of the architect, who designed the 300 m. tower for the world exposition. The tower was supposed to be standing for some years, but then it became a tourist attraction (big and easy to photograph), so the municipality decided to keep it. It's a nice metal construction, but does not represent Paris at all.
The way back to enter the metro station after the fire work at the Eiffel was a real over crowded experience, which could have been the first in my father's life.
Sunday morning, after breakfast, we put ourselves on the 6 hours home trip under 34°c Jericho weather. We made an over stop in Mons/Belgien, where we had some food. Sorry no photos, luckily out of battery.
Have fun all of you with my father at Mahira's wedding.
Salamat,
Nael and Debora

Arrived... Beit Sahour...
We are finally in Beit Sahour... ! The trip was a bit too long and we were very tired, but of course, arriving home, seeing the family and the table set for a mahshi and warak meal... we forgot about the horrible trip :)
We've met the students from our school on our way and we traveled together.. crossing the bridge was not that hard, things weren't so hectic and it wasn't that full like it usually is during this time of the year... At around one o'clock we were already home...
more post will follow when we finally get rested..
love,
Bisan
Hart luck

Saif continues the tour in Germany
Yesterday, Debora and I attended the wonderful and harmonic performance in Wiesloch. We were astonished.. Saif is the new Dabka talent in the family.
At 22:30 we drove back together with my father to Bonn, where he'll stay until the 16th of this month.
Hani sends his best wishes to all of you, and promises that he'll start posting at the blog as soon as he is back home. -- he has time and a password :)
Poetry on Sunday - Duna

RE: Dafer's webiste-tip - nael
For those who still didn't try it;
This website includes 100s of music lists, each list contains many songs with similar taste.
When you enter the website, it asks you to write an artist's name or a song title. This question is to know which taste do you want. Let's say you choose "Marcel Khalife", you'll have for results, four different songs (this time in one list 940d). Click on any of these songs. The Radio will start with the song you choose and then plays similar style ones, like from Nirvana, Holden or ROUTe.
As you see the music is divided due to the style and taste not artist, language or age.
So, if you put Nancy Ajram for example you'll have 10 lists of similar trash in other languages as well.
The Radio doesn't have much arabic but really nice music. (for Ibtisam: a petty no Kathem el-Saher)
more features: you can create a user name and password, so you'll be able to make your own lists, or select favorites songs. As well as you can blog a song (add it to our blog).
if you click this box, you'll hear a song that i blogged from the radio as an example

Poetry on Sunday - Duna
